Introduction

Established in 1970 initially as an Institute of Technology, the University of Benin (UNIBEN) attained full-fledged university status on 1 July 1971, as accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC). It transitioned into a federal government-owned university on 1 April 1975.

Situated in Benin City, the capital of Edo State in the south-south region of Nigeria, UNIBEN boasts two primary campuses: the Ugbowo campus and the Ekehuan campus. Beyond these, the university encompasses additional sites and centers, including the Institute of Child Health, the Institute of Public Administration and Extension Services, and the Centre of Excellence in Geosciences and Petroleum Engineering.

Comprising 15 faculties, one college, and three institutes, UNIBEN offers a diverse array of over 130 degree courses and programs across various disciplines. The university accommodates an estimated student population of 60,000 and boasts an alumni community numbering around 350,000. UNIBEN takes pride in producing accomplished graduates who have made significant contributions nationally and internationally across various fields.

Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements for the University of Benin (UNIBEN) encompass both general and specific criteria. To secure admission, prospective students must adhere to the following general prerequisites:

  1. Age Requirement: Applicants should have attained the age of 16 by the time of admission.
  2. Educational Qualifications: A minimum of five credit passes in relevant subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, at the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or equivalent, such as the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level, National Examination Council (NECO), or National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), obtained in not more than two sittings.
  3. UTME: Registration and participation in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), with the attainment of the minimum cut-off mark for the chosen course.
  4. Post-UTME: Application for and participation in the Post-UTME screening exercise conducted by the university, achieving the required score for the chosen course.

In addition to these general requirements, candidates must fulfill specific conditions outlined by different faculties and courses. These may include subject combinations for the UTME and Post-UTME, cut-off marks, and any other stipulated conditions, which can be found on the university website or the JAMB brochure.

Application Process:

  1. Visit the JAMB website and create a profile using a valid email address and phone number.
  2. Generate a Personal Identification Number (PIN) and pay the application fee of N3,500 through approved channels.
  3. Access the JAMB registration portal using the PIN and fill the online application form with personal and academic details.
  4. Select the University of Benin (UNIBEN) as the first choice of institution and choose the preferred course of study.
  5. Print the application slip and examination slip, containing registration number, examination center, date, and time.
  6. Sit for the UTME at the designated center, check results on the JAMB website or via SMS.
  7. Visit the university website and register for the Post-UTME screening exercise using JAMB registration number and a valid email address.
  8. Pay the screening fee of N2,000 through approved channels.
  9. Print the screening slip and acknowledgment slip, including screening date, time, and venue.
  10. Attend the screening exercise at the designated venue, check results on the university website or via SMS.
  11. Await the release of the admission list, check admission status on the university website or JAMB portal.
  12. If offered admission, accept the offer on the JAMB portal, print the admission letter.
  13. Pay the acceptance fee and other charges as specified by the university, print payment receipts.
  14. Attend the physical clearance and verification of credentials at the university.
  15. Register for courses online and offline, obtain matriculation number and identity card.
  16. Attend the orientation program and matriculation ceremony.
