“Roaring Triumphs: The Atlas Lions of Morocco’s National Team”

Morocco’s national football team, known as “منتخب الْمَغْرِب لِكُرَّةُ الْقَدَم” in Arabic, represents the country in international men’s football. The team is under the control of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, which serves as the governing body for football in Morocco.

Regarded as one of Africa’s most successful national football squads, Morocco achieved significant milestones by winning the 1976 African Cup of Nations, securing two African Nations Championships, and clinching a FIFA Arab Cup title. The team has participated in the FIFA World Cup six times, with a notable accomplishment in 1986 when they became the first African team to lead a group and advance to the knockout stages, though they ultimately lost to West Germany with a score of 1–0.

In a surprising turn of events at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Morocco emerged as group leaders, surpassing teams like Croatia, Canada, and Belgium. They went on to eliminate Spain and Portugal, marking themselves as the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals. This achievement positioned them as the third-ever semi-finalist not affiliated with UEFA or CONMEBOL. Despite their commendable journey, Morocco faced defeat against France in the semi-finals and lost the third-place play-off, ultimately securing a historic 4th-place finish.

At their peak, the Atlas Lions claimed the 10th spot in the FIFA World Rankings in April 1998. They held the title of the top African national team for three consecutive years from 1997 to 1999 and regained this status in December 2022. As of September 2023, Morocco currently holds the 13th position in the global FIFA rankings.
