History:
Koforidua Technical University, situated in the Eastern Region, stands as a prominent public tertiary institution in Ghana and is recognized as one of the rapidly growing Technical Universities in the country. Established initially as a Polytechnic in 1997, it underwent a transformation into a Technical University on September 1, 2016, in adherence to the Technical University Act 2016 (Act 922).

From its modest beginnings with a single block structure and a small student population in 1997, the university has undergone substantial growth in terms of students, programs, faculties, and infrastructure.

Koforidua Technical University presently boasts five faculties and one institute, catering to approximately eight thousand students:

GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR 4-YEAR B.TECH PROGRAMMES

i) SSSCE Applicants

  • Passes (A-D) in three (3) core subjects: English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science.
  • Three (3) relevant elective subjects with passes (A-D).
  • Cumulative aggregate must be 24 or better.

ii) WASSCE Applicants

  • Credit passes (A1-C6) in three core subjects: English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science.
  • Three (3) credit passes (A1-C6) in three relevant elective subjects.
  • Cumulative aggregate must be 36 or better.

iii) GCE ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level Applicants

  • Six (6) GCE ‘O’ Level passes including English Language, Mathematics, and General Science.
  • Three (3) GCE ‘A’ Level passes in relevant courses.

iv) Applicants from Technical Institutions

  • Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science.
  • Credit passes in relevant elective courses.

v) Applicants with Technician Certificate

  • Motor Vehicle Technicians II (MVT II) may be considered for admission at Level 200.
  • Motor Vehicle Technicians III (MVT III) may be considered for admission at Level 300.

vi) HND Applicants

  • HND graduates with the requisite specialization will enroll at Level 300.
  • HND graduates with requisite specialization will enroll at Level 200 (Mechatronics).
  • Applicants with University Diploma in relevant subjects will enroll at Level 300.
  • Ordinary Technical Diploma (OTD) will enroll at Level 200.

vii) Technician Applicants

  • At least Part II and III Technicians Certificate Holders in EET or Radio & Television.
  • Telecommunication Technician plus English, Mathematics, and Science.
  • EET II or Radio & Television Technician II or Telecommunication Technician II with passes in English, Mathematics & Science at the SSSCE/WASSCE level.

viii) Applicants with DBS Certificates

  • Four (4) WASSCE subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
  • Holders of DBS Marketing, Purchasing and Supply, and Secretaryship may be enrolled at Level 200 on the respective BTech Programme.

ix) Mature Applicants

  • Twenty-five (25) years old.
  • Pass a written test in English Language, Mathematics, and General Knowledge.

APPLICANTS FROM TECHNICAL SCHOOLS (CERTIFICATE II APPLICANTS)

  • Passes in three (3) subjects including English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science.
  • Three (3) relevant elective subjects/trade courses.

DBS APPLICANTS

  • Four (4) SSSCE/WASSCE passes including English and Mathematics.
  • At least three (3) passes in relevant DBS subjects.

TEACHER’S CERTIFICATE

  • Three-Year Post-Secondary Certificate or Four-Year Certificate ‘A’.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of teaching experience.
  • Three (3) GCE O-Level or SSSCE/WASSCE passes in relevant elective subjects.

Mature Applicants

  • Twenty-five (25) years old.
  • Pass a written test in English Language, Mathematics, and General Knowledge.

  • Four (4) SSSCE/WASSCE passes (including English, Mathematics plus Elective Mathematics or Physics) Or

Certificate II in Fashion Design and Textiles:-2-Years

  • Passes in SSSCE/WASSCE/GBCE/’O’ Level subjects.
  • National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) Fashion Certificate Grade I or Grade II or equivalent.

Advanced Fashion Design and Textiles:-2-Year

  • City and Guilds Certificate in Fashion & Designing (Dressmaking and Tailoring) Or
  • Intermediate Dressmaking/Fashion Certificate plus at least one (1) year of relevant practical experience Or
  • Four (4) passes in SSSCE/WASSCE subjects including English Language, Mathematics and any other elective subjects plus basic knowledge and skills in Dressmaking Or
  • Four (4) passes in GCE ‘O’ Level including English Language Mathematics plus knowledge in Dressmaking.

Construction Technician Certificate (CTC) Part I

  • Four (4) SSSCE/WASSCE passes including English, Mathematics and Technical Drawing.
  • Technical Construction option Subjects: Craft (B/C, C/J, P/D, and Plumbing) and Advanced (B/C, C/J, P/D, and Plumbing.)
  • Passes in General Course in Construction (GCC)

Mechanical Engineering Technician (MET) Part I

  • Four (4) SSSCE/WASSCE passes including English, Mathematics and Science
  • Technical Option Subjects: Engineering Crafts, Intermediate General Engineering (GE), MECP
  • Technical Option Subjects: MVM, Intermediate General Engineering (GE)

Electrical Engineering Technician (EET) Part I

  • Four (4) SSSCE/WASSCE passes including English, Mathematics and Science and any two of the following – Applied Electricity/Electronics, Physics, Mathematics.

Catering Certificate II – 2 years

  • Passes in relevant SSSCE/WASSCE/GBCE/ GCE O-Level subjects.
  • NVTI Grade II or JHS Certificate with working experience.

Certificate in Draughtsmanship

  • JHS Certificate with working experience.

BRIDGING PROGRAMME

  • D7 in any of the three (3) core subjects (i.e. English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science plus three (3) relevant electives subjects including Physics and Elective Mathematics with an aggregate not exceeding 36.
  • Two (2) month intensive bridging (pre-degree) programme prior to formal admission to the following programmes after passing a selection examination: Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Renewable Energy Systems Engineering, Civil Engineering.

F) PRE-HND PROGRAMME

  • National Board for Professional and Technicians Examinations (NABPTEX) designed an access course for Technical/Vocational Institute graduates into HND Programmes.
  • Available Programmes: Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Renewable Energy Systems Engineering, Civil Engineering, Building Technology, Hospitality Management, Fashion Design & Textiles, Food Technology, Post-Harvest Technology.
  • Duration: One (1) academic year (Two (2) semesters of 16 weeks per semester)
  • Candidates required to obtain at least 50% in each of the three (3) subjects: English Language, Mathematics, and Science.
