Ginger drink is a popular and refreshing beverage in Nigeria, enjoyed for its spicy and invigorating flavor. Here’s a simple recipe for making Nigerian ginger drink at home:

Ingredients:

  • Fresh ginger root (about 1 cup, peeled and grated)
  • Water (about 4 cups)
  • Sugar or sweetener of choice (to taste)
  • Lime or lemon juice (optional, for added citrusy flavor)
  • Ice cubes (for serving)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Ginger:

  • Peel and grate the fresh ginger root. You can adjust the quantity of ginger based on your preference for spiciness.

2. Boil the Ginger:

  • In a saucepan, bring the grated ginger and water to a boil. Allow it to simmer for about 10-15 minutes to extract the flavors. The longer you simmer, the stronger the ginger flavor will be.

3. Strain the Ginger:

  • Strain the ginger mixture to remove the solid pieces. You can use a fine mesh strainer, cheesecloth, or a piece of clean cloth for this.

4. Sweeten the Ginger Infusion:

  • While the ginger infusion is still warm, add sugar or your preferred sweetener to taste. Stir until the sweetener is completely dissolved. Adjust the sweetness according to your preference.

5. Cool the Ginger Drink:

  • Allow the ginger infusion to cool to room temperature. You can speed up the cooling process by placing it in the refrigerator.

6. Add Citrus (Optional):

  • If you like, add a splash of lime or lemon juice to the ginger drink for a citrusy twist. This step is optional but adds a nice layer of flavor.

7. Serve:

  • Pour the ginger drink into glasses over ice cubes. Garnish with a slice of lime or lemon if desired.

8. Enjoy:

  • Refresh yourself with the homemade Nigerian ginger drink. It’s perfect for hot days or as a soothing beverage.

Feel free to experiment with the proportions of ginger, sugar, and citrus to tailor the drink to your taste preferences. Some variations also include spices like cloves or mint for added complexity. Adjust the recipe to suit your liking and enjoy the spicy and delightful flavor of Nigerian ginger drink.

Ginger Juice Recipe – A Famous Nigerian Juice

It’s known for its vibrant colors and a unique blend of flavors. Here’s a basic recipe for making Nigerian Chapman:

Who Invented This?

The true origin of Nigerian chapman is unknown but rumours of its inception are traced to the same Ikoyi club mentioned in my story above. Ikoyi club is rumoured to have invented the chapman cocktail way back in the 30’s where a bartender made the drink for his regular customer, a British member of the club known only as Chapman. The Chapman cocktail since then until now has been traditionally served in a dimpled mug as a sophisticated non-alcoholic drink.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of Fanta (or any orange soda)
  • 1 cup of Sprite (or any lemon-lime soda)
  • 1/2 cup of blackcurrant cordial or blackcurrant syrup
  • 1/4 cup of grenadine syrup
  • 2 to 3 dashes of aromatic bitters
  • Ice cubes
  • Slices of citrus fruits (orange and lime) for garnish
  • Cucumber slices for garnish
  • Maraschino cherries for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Fill a glass with ice cubes.
  2. Pour in the Fanta and Sprite. The combination of orange and lemon-lime sodas gives the drink its distinctive flavor.
  3. Add the blackcurrant cordial or blackcurrant syrup. This adds a fruity and slightly tangy element to the drink.
  4. Pour in the grenadine syrup. Grenadine adds sweetness and a rich red color to the cocktail.
  5. Add a few dashes of aromatic bitters. Bitters provide depth and complexity to the flavor profile.
  6. Stir the ingredients gently to combine. Be careful not to over-stir to maintain the layered look of the cocktail.
  7. Garnish the drink with slices of citrus fruits (orange and lime), cucumber slices, and maraschino cherries if desired.
  8. Serve immediately and enjoy your Nigerian Chapman!

It’s worth noting that there can be variations in the Chapman recipe, and some people may add additional ingredients like Angostura bitters or even a splash of a non-alcoholic wine for extra depth. The key is to balance the sweet, fruity, and slightly bitter flavors to create a refreshing and delightful beverage.
