Le Jardin Secret’s

Le Jardin Secret is tucked away in the Marrakech Medina, nestled in the old town. While it is relatively easy to find with signposts and notices directing you towards it, navigating Marrakech’s labyrinthine streets and stalls can add a touch of complexity. For those familiar with Marrakech, the market can feel like a maze of similar streets, so it’s advisable to allocate a little extra time for finding it.

The roots of the complex trace back to the Saadian Dynasty, with a history spanning more than four hundred years. In the mid-Nineteenth century, the site was reconstructed at the request of an influential kaid of the Atlas Mountains. Over the years, Le Jardin Secret has served as the residence for some of Morocco and Marrakech’s most significant political figures.

Two distinct building complexes form Le Jardin Secret, each one conceived as a riad in and of itself. Enclosed by high walls without windows, the riad, with its rectangular layout, develops around a large garden. In the middle of the garden, divided into four flowerbeds by the intersection of two raised walkways, a marble basin has been erected. Pointed arch and wooden lintel porticoes usher you into the pavilions of Le Jardin Secret, which display exposed beams, double doors and windows that rise slightly higher than the ground. The importance of the building, first demonstrated by its large size, is underlined by the presence of a private hammam, the qubba and the tower: towering above the medina, the tower and the qubba served to symbolize its owner’s wealth and power. From a decorative point of view, Le Jardin Secret is characterized by the large presence of tadelakt, applied on brick and rammed earth walls. The zellij and the bejmat from Fez, the inlaid cedar wood, hand-carved stuccos and geometric designs made by master decorators showcase the outstanding skills of the local craftsmen.

Le Jardin Secret Today. In addition to its two delighgtful gardens, this exquisite oasis of peace and tranquillity also features a museum where visitors can learn, through audio-visual presentations, more about the history of the site and its former palace as well as the story behind the contemporary project to recreate them in line with Moroccan tradition.

The complex includes a small bar and rooftop cafeteria, the ideal place to sit back and take in the peaceful, historic atmosphere of this outstanding new attraction.
