Overview:

Ashesi University is a private, non-profit institution located in Berekuso, near Accra, Ghana. Established with a mission to educate ethical, entrepreneurial leaders in Africa, the university aims to instill critical thinking skills, a concern for others, and the courage to drive transformation on the continent.

Founding and Accreditation:

• Ashesi was founded as an independent, not-for-profit institution and received accreditation from the Ghanaian National Accreditation Board (now Ghana Tertiary Education Commission) in September 2001.
• Initially operating under the mentorship of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Ashesi gained independence and the ability to confer its own degrees with a Presidential Charter in January 2018.

Campus and Architecture:

• The 100-acre campus includes the Natembea Health Centre, sports courts, a sports center with a football field, running track, and gym.
• The architectural design incorporates elements of the Ghanaian vernacular, with inspiration from traditional compound houses and Northern dwellings.
• Sustainable practices include maximizing natural views, light, and ventilation, rainwater harvesting, a sewage and organic treatment plant, and 40% of daytime electrical needs met through solar power.

Organization and Governance:

• Ashesi has 88 teaching staff and over 150 administrative staff organized into departments such as Humanities and Social Sciences, Business Administration, Computer Science and Information Systems, and Engineering.
